BTOG is pleased to highlight a new practical guide published in Clinical Oncology for providing post-operative radiotherapy to thymic epithelial tumours developed by our Thymic Malignancies Special Interest Group.
Thymic epithelial tumours are rare, and most patients are cured by surgery alone. It can, therefore, be challenging for clinicians to develop sufficient experience in providing post-operative radiotherapy for these complex patients. To support clinicians in providing high quality post-operative radiotherapy and reduce unwarranted variation in practice across the United Kingdom, BTOG has developed a practical guide to post-operative radiotherapy for thymic epithelial tumours under the coordination of Dr Stephen Robinson and Dr Margaret Harris.
Following an extensive process of expert multidisciplinary discussions (radiologists, surgeons, histopathologists, and clinical oncologists), synthesis of current published guidelines, and a blinded clinical target volume contouring assessment, we have developed a clear and accessible guideline for contouring and planning post-operative radiotherapy. This includes providing mandatory and optimal recommendations for each step of the post-operative radiotherapy planning process to drive improvements in the care of patients with thymic epithelial tumours.
