Steering Committee Chair: Dr Tom Newsom-Davis
Tom is a consultant thoracic medical oncologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. He has an active clinical trials portfolio. He has been UK Chief Investigator for a number of studies, as well as chairing Independent Data Monitoring Committees and sitting on trial steering groups. He has published over 70 papers and presented more than 120 abstracts in national and international meetings.
Tom joined the steering committee of BTOG in 2017. He serves on the Multidisciplinary Clinical Science Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), on the Oncology Council of the Royal Society of Medicine, and as an invited clinic expert for NICE. Tom is past Chair of the RM Partners Cancer Alliance Lung group, and past member of the NCRI Lung Cancer Clinical Studies Group.
Tom has been an invited lecturer for various organisations including the Royal College of Physicians, European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), IASLC, British Medical Association and the Association of Cancer Physicians. He has been a faculty member for ESMO and IASLC meeting. His work on Acute Diagnostic Oncology Clinics has previously been awarded a Macmillan Innovation Excellence Award.
Steering Committee Vice Chair: Dr Riyaz Shah
Dr Riyaz Shah qualified from Guy’s and St Thomas Hospitals in 1994, trained in medical oncology at The Royal Marsden Hospital, completed a PhD at The Hammersmith Hospital and has been a Consultant Thoracic Medical Oncologist at The Kent Oncology Centre since 2006.
A member of the British Thoracic Oncology Group steering committee since 2020, Dr Shah is active in many of their educational activities. Riyaz runs an active thoracic oncology service in Kent and is research lead for his centre. Riyaz is passionate about improving medical education opportunities for the wider MDT while also utilising the power of social media to deliver this.

She has extensive secretarial and administrative experience working at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester for 18 years – 11 of these in Thoracic Surgery as a Senior Medical Secretary.
Gina is very committed to supporting BTOG in its work to improve outcomes for patients with thoracic malignancies.
Dawn Mckinley BA (Open) PgCert Healthcare Leadership
Dawn joined BTOG in 2002, when BTOG was first established, and is now the Chief Operating Officer (COO) providing leadership and management and, along with the Board of Trustees and Steering Committee, Dawn plays a key role in the development of BTOG.
From 2004 until 2014, Dawn was also the Operational Manager of Mesothelioma UK – holding senior management positions in both BTOG and Mesothelioma UK during that time.
From 2014 to 2024, Dawn was a trustee for Mesothelioma UK. Dawn’s earlier professional background included marketing, PA and VAT accountancy and just prior to starting at BTOG, Dawn worked in Sydney, Australia for 2 years as a VAT Consultant. Dawn is passionate and committed to her work and supporting the aims and objectives of BTOG as it seeks to improve outcomes for patients with thoracic malignancies.
